Through this microgrant, Conroe High School's Theatre Department received four Canon Rebel T7 cameras, extra battery sets, SIM cards, and card readers, providing students with the professional equipment needed to continue the department's annual film project despite restrictions on cell phone use. Access to these cameras allowed Theatre II students to experience filmmaking with industry-style equipment while learning film history, camera operation, cinematography, lighting, and visual storytelling.
Working in collaborative production teams, Theatre II students wrote, filmed, and edited seven original short films while serving in production roles such as cinematographer, script supervisor, production assistant, gaffer, and props supervisor. Rather than assigning a single director, students shared responsibility for creative decisions, strengthening their communication, leadership, and collaboration skills as they learned to advocate for ideas, solve problems, and compromise to achieve a common goal. Students also faced real-world production challenges, including actor absences, limited filming locations during campus renovations, and schedule disruptions due to state testing. They responded by rewriting scripts, recasting roles, and adapting scenes, demonstrating resilience and creative thinking throughout the process. Many students shared that using professional cameras made the experience feel authentic and inspired a greater interest in filmmaking careers, while others discovered the importance of teamwork and leadership. As one student reflected, "It really taught me that if you're missing one part of a thing, it becomes more difficult. Every single person matters." The project showed students that every role is essential to a successful production and equipped them with skills that will benefit them well beyond the theatre classroom.
