Rotating Exhibitions

The Woodlands Arts Council Gallery brings our community closer to the artists who live and create around us. Our rotating exhibitions showcase local and regional artists working across a wide range of media, from painting, photography and sculpture to glass, fiber, mixed media and more.

Throughout the year, the Gallery presents individual artists, collaborative exhibitions and community-focused collections, creating opportunities to discover new perspectives and connect with the creative talent in our region. Exhibitions are complemented by opening receptions and opportunities to hear directly from participating artists about their work and creative process.

About the Juror

René Wiley graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX in 1983. In years to follow, Wiley travel to New Mexico and Arizona to study with masters in oil and all prima techniques. Wiley has won numerous juried exhibitions, was represented by galleries in Houston, Galveston and Dallas, and taught plein air and studio workshops for many years. After Hurricane Ike destroyed her studio in 2008, Wiley and her husband decided to exclusively represent her work in Galveston, Texas, opening the René Wiley Gallery in 2009. They have now been a successful galley on Galveston Island for over 17 years. Rene’s husband and daughter run the gallery together and they now represent their three, award-winning daughters’ artworks as well.

René Wiley is famously prolific and can be found painting in her studio almost 60 hours a week, preparing for each new exhibition of paintings that opens every eight weeks in her gallery. She is well known for her signature alla prima style, using bold colors and thick brushstrokes in geometric square patterns of impasto oil paint. Wiley is inspired by the patterns of light, form and shadow that are found in and around her home and her signature use of bold color and thick oil paint is impressive. She captures a variety of local subjects including historic Galveston's magnificent architecture, Texas seabirds and songbirds, and dramatic landscapes of the harbor, estuary marshes and beaches. René Wiley is now one of the most well-known, well-respected and well-collected oil painters on the Gulf Coast.

Awards will be announced and presented at the opening reception on November 12.

First Prize — Recipient will receive a three-day Featured Artist Pop-Up Exhibition at The Woodlands Arts Council gallery, featuring a collection of the artist's work. The exhibition includes curatorial assistance from The Woodlands Arts Council, social media promotion, and the opportunity for the artist to personally invite and host collectors, friends, and guests during gallery open hours on any or all of the three exhibition days.
