This year, The Woodlands Arts Council grant provided professional-quality watercolor supplies that transformed our art classroom and expanded students’ creative possibilities. Students quickly became excited as they explored how watercolors blend, flow, and create unexpected effects.
In a lesson inspired by Cubist tipis, students experimented with color, shape, and texture. Many who were initially hesitant began working with growing confidence. A quiet third-grade student, created a striking cubist-inspired tipi and proudly shared her work with the class, a meaningful moment of confidence and recognition.
Collaboration naturally emerged as students shared techniques such as salt textures and paint lifting. The classroom became a supportive space of discovery and encouragement.
Student artwork was later displayed in a hallway gallery, where teachers, staff, and families celebrated their work and growth. Students also developed patience and resilience, learning that watercolor “mistakes” can lead to beautiful results.
Overall, this project strengthened confidence, creativity, and community through the support of The Woodlands Arts Council.
