Conroe High School - Self Portrait Curriculum

Students explored the history of self-portraiture and how modern media has shaped today’s idea of the “selfie,” then used that understanding to create layered, mixed-media self-portraits that expressed their identity, emotions, and sense of self. Working through this process helped students move beyond surface-level representation and think more deeply about who they are and how they communicate through art.

With funding from this project, students were able to experiment with new tools and materials they had never used before, which increased engagement, confidence, and creative risk-taking. Many students who were initially unsure of their abilities became more willing to explore ideas and revise their work as they developed their pieces.

The project also had a direct impact on student achievement and participation in the UIL Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE), including one student who advanced to the State level and earned a score of 4. Students demonstrated stronger performance overall and gained valuable experience through the competition process.

Made possible by The Woodlands Arts Council, this opportunity helped students find their voice through art while building confidence, creativity, and a deeper understanding of self-expression.
