Caney Creek High School - Mixed Media & Alternative Surfaces Kit

After receiving The Dr. David Gottlieb Education Microgrant art teacher Ashley Magee was finally able to launch The Mixed Media & Alternative Surfaces Art Initiative that gave students at Caney Creek High School the opportunity to explore professional-quality art materials and discover new ways to express themselves creatively. Many of Caney Creek’s students are economically disadvantaged and face significant challenges outside of school, making these experiences especially meaningful. Through ceramics, watercolor, mixed media, embroidery, tempera batik, and alternative surfaces, students developed technical skills while creating artwork that reflected their identities, cultures, and personal experiences. As their confidence grew, students became more willing to take creative risks, work independently, and share their voices through art. Their work was professionally displayed on campus, allowing students and their families to celebrate their accomplishments. Multiple students also advanced to the UIL Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE), including two who qualified for the State competition.

One student's experience best illustrates the project's impact. Initially quiet and lacking confidence, she often doubted her artistic ability before beginning an assignment. During our ceramic sculpture unit, she created a deeply personal sculpture inspired by growth and resilience. As she worked, her confidence blossomed, and she began experimenting independently and staying after class to continue refining her piece. Seeing her family's pride during the campus exhibition—and hearing the student say it was the first time she had ever truly been proud of something she created—was the project's greatest success. Her sculpture advanced to the VASE State competition, showing how these meaningful opportunities for the students can exceed even their own expectations.
