At Stewart Elementary in the Conroe Independent School District, there are three music teachers. They all teach general music from Kindergarten through fourth grade, and when students enter fifth and sixth grades, they choose an elective: choir, band, orchestra, or art. “The early exposure of students to music and art is beneficial to them, for it will develop artistic skill and creativity,” explains Music Teacher, Ms. Perez.
With a partnership with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the Performing Arts Microgrant enabled all three music teachers at Stewart Elementary to have the same materials and instruments provided for the majority of Conroe ISD general music teachers. Now, all students receive equal resources and a consistent, high-quality education, learning a steady beat, basic rhythms, and more, ensuring every child has access to a strong music education, no matter the classroom.
