The Electric Orchestra at Moorhead Junior High is unlike any other in the district. Combining traditional acoustic instruments with electric ones –like the Sting Ray Violin and Cobra Cello— this program offers an engaging experience that grabs the attention of young players and develops their musical skills. The electric instruments not only give a unique taste in their shape, color, and sound, but can be used in multiple circumstances and diverse ways, such as smartphones and tablets.
Today, the orchestra has expanded to have fifteen students performing on electric instruments at concerts and pep rallies, making it the largest junior high school electric orchestra in the district.
Thanks to the Performing Arts Microgrant, in Partnership with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Moorhead Junior High has been able to purchase key equipment like Yamaha keyboard covers, Wood Violin electric instruments, carbon fiber bows, amps, cables, and more. These additions have significantly elevated the students’ learning and performance experience. Wireless systems, in particular, allow solo electric violin and cello players the freedom to move throughout the stage and audience, bringing performances to life and creating memorable experiences.
“The Moorhead Jr. High electric orchestra program has evolved from a ‘show and tell’ event to a hands-on, immersive experience which allows students an avenue for creativity and expression many did not even know existed,” shares Ms. Tarvia M. Blackshear, Orchestra Teacher at Moorhead Jr. High.
The Woodlands Arts Council has proudly supported this program for three years, investing $15,000 through its Microgrant Program and in Partnership with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. With this support, Moorhead’s Electronic Orchestra continues to empower students and redefine what music education can be.
