With grant funding from The Woodlands Arts Council, Art teacher Melody Laughbaum introduced every Broadway Elementary student to experience hands-on clay art, many of them for the first time. Students explored slab rolling, pinch pots, coiled pots, and sculpting imaginative forms including textured designs and “big mouth monsters.” After learning about glaze, they selected colors and completed their pieces from start to finish.
Students were thrilled to see and feel their finished work after kiln firing, often expressing pride and excitement. Many shared that their clay pieces felt like “treasures” they would keep forever. Across all classes, one thing was consistent—every student loved creating with clay and felt successful as an artist.
