The nonprofit Reading Is Revolutionary secured funding to make it possible for Hailey Elementary to partner with Macmillan Publishers and bring award-winning author and illustrator Angela Dominguez to campus and provide a book for every student. As a Title I school serving a diverse population, “This grant ensures that every child at Hailey Elementary will not only meet a celebrated author but will also take home one of her books for themselves,” said Teresa Kenney, founder of Reading Is Revolutionary
Students received bilingual picture books in the lower grades and Angela Dominguez’s Texas Bluebonnet Award–nominated graphic novel in the upper grades. Before the visit, students engaged with her work through classroom read-alouds, building excitement and connection. During her visit, students eagerly participated in activities, asked thoughtful questions, and celebrated the opportunity to meet a published author.
Afterward, each student received a signed copy of their book. Many immediately began reading, and families later shared how students continued the experience at home through drawing, reading, and storytelling inspired by the visit.
