Birnham Woods Elementary - Textile Art Project

With support from the Dr. David Gottlieb Education Microgrant, students at Birnham Woods Elementary are diving into the colorful world of textile art. Third and fourth graders are creating latch hook rugs and knitting their own animals—projects that go far beyond art class.

The microgrant provided the resources to offer a special creative experience, helping students build confidence, develop practical skills, and find new ways to connect with each other. The artwork they’ve produced is colorful, unique, and a true reflection of their growing self-assurance and creativity.

“There are many benefits children experience from textile art. It teaches patience for creating an item where time and effort bring it to completion. It develops fine motor skills, problem-solving, and math skills... It reduces anxiety, improves memory, teaches vocabulary, and creates a skill,” explains art teacher Ms. Lisa Wooldridge.
