Bush Elementary - Modeling Clay
I am very grateful for The Woodlands Arts Council for granting me funds for my students to get to create model magic 3D art sculptures and model magic glaze. Students were taught several hand building skills like making pinch pots, vases, cups, tea pots, pinch pot animals, pop art food, pop art cartoon, video game, book and real life characters. Students were able to use clay tools for texture and details. The students absolutely love to sculpt using model magic. It is easy to work with and very soft. Some say it is even therapeutic to work with. Shrills of excitement happened when students learned that they were going to get to use model magic. They were able to take their sculpture home in a bag with tissue paper in it, so it wouldn't break, and parents and teachers loved that the students could learn to express themselves through their sculptures.
The students were able to practice for three class times before they had their final model magic sculpture making day. They learned the art element form and shape because they find a way to make their sculpture stand up on it's own. They also had to learn how to form and shape their model to create something unique to them. They learned the art element color and value because they were able to mix model magic colors to create whatever they felt looked best. They learned the art element texture by using texture plates and art clay tools to create their art. When it was dry they were able to glaze their art which made their creation look glossy or glittery. Students would say, "I love art class, I can't wait to come back, I can't wait to take it home."
This project built confidence, artistic creativity, independence and collaboration.
