Regina Lyubovnaya’s Artistic Journey: A Tale of Luck and Stubbornness

When people compliment her artistic skills, she doesn't consider herself talented. Rather, she attributes her success to luck and determination. She wasn't a child prodigy with a paintbrush in hand. In fact, she wasn't interested in art until I turned 15. Her family was moving to the US, and she had one year of high school left to complete. Her father proposed private painting lessons as an alternative to attending school. She jumped at the chance to learn.

Shortly after, her family moved to Los Angeles, and she found herself in a high school where everyone spoke English except her. Art became her favorite class because she didn't need to speak. She knew she wanted to be a traditional painter, but training opportunities were scarce 30 years ago. Her journey led her to several schools and locations, such as Loyola Marymount University, Art Center College of Design, Florence Academy in Italy, and Student League in New York. Despite attending all of these schools, she felt lost and confused.

It wasn't until she met David Leffel, a master painter, that things started to click. David was her guide for the next seven years, and he often said, "Painting is logical and therefore learnable." She desperately wanted to learn, so she painted hundreds of bad paintings until something finally shifted.

Every artist's journey is unique, and hers was long and winding. However, she feels lucky everyday to be painting, learning, and discovering new things.

Art Dash Party:

The Art Dash Party, presented by The Woodlands Compounding Pharmacy, will take place on Friday, April 12th, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. As a prelude to the festival, the highlight of the evening is the exciting 60-Second Art Dash, in which ticket holders quickly dash to select a coveted original art piece donated by the festival’s artists.

Party tickets are $175 each, and the 60-Second Art Dash tickets are $250 each. Table sponsorships are available for $3,000 - $8,000. For more information, visit https://www.thewoodlandsartscouncil.org/events/2024/2024-art-dash-party2
