Across The Pond
Featuring the works of Annette Palmer

Artist Statement:

“Across The Pond” literally and metaphorically.

My artistic journey which begins on the untamed shores of Scotland leads to the sublime lakes and ponds in The Woodlands area. These contemporary abstract paintings conjure up emotion through the exploration of experimental textures, collage, pattern and elements of mixed media. Seabirds and waves merge and thrash together in an energetic flurry, industrial horizons sit quietly in the background of the untamed beauty of the coast. A pandemic emptiness, vast open spaces question who is on the other side, these works are rendered in neutral palettes with glimmers of silver and gold, their lustrous surfaces representing hope and optimism.

The voyage calms as we reach the blissful lakes and ponds of The Woodlands, balmy greens and chartreuse colors invite us to the inland waters, reflections, once again, metaphorical and literal, examine innermost introversions with a sense of peace. A world returns with a renewed optimism. Flocks of birds in flight symbolizing relationships, friendships and communities stretch across the open skies, their feathers floating on the surface of the lake, tokens of a new renaissance, reminding us to realize the moment, and revel in its gift.

We are small in the universe yet connected and integral to something much bigger.

“You are a guest of nature - behave” Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Artist Bio

Originally from Scotland, Annette Palmer now lives in Magnolia, Texas where she creates her collectable fine art pieces for gallery exhibitions and private collections. Her semi abstract land and sea scape paintings, inspired by relationships, distance and the spaces in-between, feature elements of antique ephemera, collage and metallic details.

Her formal art education took place at Edinburgh College of Art/Heriot Watt University, in Scotland’s capital, graduating with a BA Honors degree in 1989. Annette went on to travel, eventually running her own design company in Singapore. Since returning “home” to Texas in 2016, Annette previously taught in many of The Woodlands private schools, as well as teaching adults from her studio. In addition to a lengthy exhibiting history which includes solo shows at Houston’s Jung Center, Archway Gallery and Glade Gallery in The Woodlands, she has also showcased her work internationally.

Annette has curated for art galleries and exhibition spaces, including H&H&8, St Luke’s Hospital, Glade Gallery, Archway Gallery, and The Woodlands Arts Council.

As well as painting and curating, she has served as a juror for numerous art competitions and writes monthly arts and culture articles for The Woodlands City Lifestyle Magazine.
