Public Art Initiative

Call for Entries: Public Art Bike Racks

in The Woodlands Arts District

Through a partnership with The Woodlands Township and the generous funding of underwriters, twenty-nine Art Benches have been commissioned and installed along The Woodlands Waterway and in the Hughes Landing commercial area adjacent to Lake Woodlands.

Designed by local, national, and international artists, these one-of-a-kind art benches add beauty to our community while serving a practical function. The Art Bicycle Racks being created in this phase of the Public Art program will be the first Art Bicycle Racks installed in The Woodlands, and are intended to expand the presence of public art in the same general areas as the Art Benches.

The Woodlands, Texas is an award-winning, master-planned community of more than 100,000 residents. Located 40 miles north of
Houston, The Woodlands has a strong history of public art. The Woodlands is an aesthetically unique district, with its natural landscapes
and waterway backdrop. We challenge the artists to conceptualize work that can highlight their own vision in conjunction with both the
underwriter and these unique chosen sites.

The Woodlands Arts Council, Inc. (TWAC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to provide regional, cultural, and educational enrichment opportunities that encourage, support, and promote the performing and visual arts.

Up to three (3) semi-finalists will be chosen for each location in a preliminary selection process. One (1) finalist for each location will be chosen to construct an art bike rack. Each of the ART BIKE RACK finalists will receive $6,000 for the bike rack selected and installed ($3,000 upon execution of Artist Agreement and the final $3,000 when the bike rack is delivered and accepted).

Site 1 Bike Rack

Hughes Landing is a high traffic, mixed use, dynamic area with lots of bike traffic. This location near the John Runnels Canoe sculpture and the Wetlands Gardens is the heart of Hughes Landing retail area. The underwriters are excited by the idea of replacing a utilitarian bike rack with an exciting piece of functional artwork. The artist can draw inspiration from the beautiful Lake Woodlands, nature, and wildlife to create art symbolizing faith, hope and love.

Site 2 Bike Rack

The Riva Row area of The Woodlands teems with families out enjoying various activities along the waterway. Many visitors prefer to ride their bikes to this delightful center of outdoor fun. Whether for a walk, a run, a stroll, a kayak ride or even a picnic on the grass, this is a busy area all year round. An artist has a wonderful opportunity to let their imagination flow to create an art bike rack that is innovative, playful, even unusual, a functional piece that will be the “highlight of the path.”

Site 3 Bike Rack

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion has been named one of the top outdoor music venues in the country with an annual attendance averaging over 500,000. This art bike rack will be well used and highly visible both during the concert season and in the off-season. The underwriter would like to see a functional design reflecting the Pavilion’s mission to make performing arts accessible to the community, as well as a piece symbolizing people coming together to enjoy music and the performing arts.

Site 4 Bike Rack

Many families have grown up in The Woodlands and have memories of riding bikes to the Cinemark movie theatre. Memories might also include community events such as The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, the Fourth of July parade, the Christmas Tree Lighting, and ice skating during the mild winters. The Woodlands is known for the abundance of nature and the many locales for families to observe wildlife and wildflowers. The underwriters would enjoy an art bike rack design which represents a bit of nostalgia of happy childhood memories.

Site 5 Bike Rack

Waterway Square is one of the real dining and entertainment hubs of our community. This is a great location for a stylish and functional creation. The underwriters would like to see an art bike rack that reflects the key character of The Woodlands, the welcoming spirit and the commitment to preserve green space and trees in an urban environment.
