Because Art Matters

Kelly Batterson Hired as Festival Director for 2019 Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival

The Woodlands Arts Council has hired Kelly Batterson to direct The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, a top-ranked juried fine arts festival featuring 200+ artists in a wide variety of mediums which is set for April 13-14, 2019 along The Woodlands Waterway and in Town Green Park.

Batterson’s 20+ years of experience in sales, production, marketing and promotions have served her well in coordinating the many logistical aspects of the 2018 Festival, despite unseasonably cold and rainy weather. She is also an event consultant and has worked on many of Houston’s largest events including the Houston International Festival, Tour de Houston, and the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Deb Spiess, President of The Woodlands Arts Council Board of Directors, says Batterson is “invaluable to us as we plan our next festival, which promises to be the biggest and best ever.”

Six New Art Benches Unveiled

Photo Credit: Rod Prado Hello Woodlands

The Woodlands Arts Council (TWAC) recently hosted a private tour of six magnificent new art benches situated along The Woodlands Waterway and in Hughes Landing. The celebration marked the completion of Phase 3 of the Council’s Art Bench Project, bringing the total number of art benches in the community to 20.

You can still be a part of this exciting project by underwriting an art bench in Phase 4 of the project, which is now underway. Only three sites remain available for underwriting, with the deadline of December 31 fast approaching. Your contribution not only adds to one of the largest collections of public art in the country, but also provides much needed funding for TWAC’s year-round community and education outreach programs. For more information about underwriting, contact Wendy Paynter at 713-504-6432 or click here.

Bringing Bilingual Opera Performances To Title 1 Schools... Because Art Matters!

Thanks to the generous underwriters and sponsors of our Because Art Matters education and outreach programs, Montgomery County students at seven Title 1 schools and Hauke Alternative School are experiencing the arts at their campuses this fall, through a program of the Houston Grand Opera (HGO).

Under the direction of Stage Manager Ryan Barrett, a cast and crew are bringing an operatic bilingual performance of “Cinderella in Spain” so students can experience, often for the first time, this type of performance art. Many thanks to Waste Connections and Houston Gulf Energy Corporation for underwriting the programs at Glen Loch Elementary and Magnolia Elementary, respectively. Scenes from October's Artfeel

This month's Artfeel at Crush Wine Lounge was another huge success! Thanks to Ela Dawn for delighting us with her beautiful voice, Gaston Carrio for sharing insight about the creation of "Proud Souls" and Linda Nelson of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center for underwriting such a beautiful addition to our famed art bench collection. Kudos also go to all the area residents who braved the stage and shared how public art makes them feel – their Artfeel. Look for details on the next Artfeel in early 2019.
